THE NOTICEBOARD (updated mid-June 2001)

The site now features new photos of new discoveries - Rock Art on two islands off the Santa Catarina coast which had not previously been researched: the Island of Santana de Dentro in the municipality of Imbituba and the Island of Papagaio Pequena (Little Parrot) in the municipality of Palhoça.

View photos of the Bay of Babitonga within the municipality of São Francisco do Sul: with the backing of the Bradshaw Foundation, we visited 23 islands in the bay and registered 75 archeaological sites, 35 of which feature Rupestrian Art.

The charming Catherine Hefner Urice, the Bradshaw Foundation's projects director, visited Florianopolis in late April 2001. Together we visited the islands of Campeche, Irma da Fora and Papagaio Pequena and made various copies on paper (using the 'frotage' or rubbing technique) of the Rock Art witnessed.

Coral Island Rock Art at risk of vandalism: we are sad to report the death of Joao Zeca during this last Brazilian summer. Joao had lived on the island (Ilha do Coral) for over 30 years and worked hard to protect the Rock Art and archealogical sites there. Around 100 people visit the island every day during the high season and with it now lying unoccupied the heritage is at risk of vandalism. Will the relevant authorities (IPHAN) do anything to minimize this risk? Given the organisation's record, we will have to look for other ways of ensuring the survival of the island's heritage.
